Copa Airlines means Compañía Panameña de Aviación, S.A. and it is the flag carrier airline of Panama. It was founded in 1947 with three domestic flights that stopped operating in 1980 to start operating international routes. In 1998, they established an alliance with Continental Airlines, which later merged with United. At that time they used a miles program called OnePass, which later became MileagePlus with the merger. In 2015, Copa Airlines decided to launch its own miles program called ConnectMiles. They are part of the Star Alliance which is the largest global airline alliance in the world. 28 airlines are part of this alliance moving some 762.27 million passengers in 2018 across 195 countries.
In 2006, Copa Airlines acquired 90% of the Colombian airline AeroRepública, which it later dubbed as Copa Airlines Colombia. Then in 2016, they opened a low-cost airline called Wingo. It currently flies to 80 destinations in 33 countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. In 2019 it was recognized as the most punctual airline in the world by Official Airline Guide (OAG) and for the sixth consecutive year the most punctual in America according to FlightStats.
